Diving & Snorkeling at Koh Phi Phi / Ko Phi Phi / PP /Pee Pee Island : Go Dive Lanta

Day trip diving & snorkeling at Koh Phi Phi (Ko PP.)

Trip : Koh Phi Phi (Ko P.P.)

Rating : ****

Depth :  5-30 Meters (15-100 feet)

Visibility : 5-15 meters (15-50 feet)

Suitable : All levels of Scuba divers and Snorkelers.

Ko Phi Phi's scuba diving highlights.
They are one of the best places in Thailand to see Leopard Sharks and have a healthy local population of these graceful creatures. There are also underwater pinnacles, drop-offs, walls, bolders, caverns and swim-throughs to explore.

The Phi Phi islands are an incredibly scenic diving destination. The topography from the surface is absolutely stunning; monolithic limestone mountains rising vertically from the sea and soaring to heights of more than 500 meters. Underwater you'll find an amazing environment of rugged caves, overhangs and swim-throughs in the soft rock. Other dives include sheer walls that plunge from the surface to over 25 meters. These walls contain a profusion of soft corals, large orange-colored fans, black corals, and long stringy sea whips.

Made famous by the film the beach the Phi Phi Islands offer some great diving.  Most of the dive sites are on the uninhabited Phi Phi Lei, which is about a 2 hour boat journey from Koh Lanta. The most frequently dived sites are Palong Wall and Maya Bay.  A new 40 meter wreck that has only recently been sunk will also make and interesting addition the diving in the area.

Palong Wall. Actually more of a slope than a wall this shallow dive site provides one of the best opportunities in the area to see black tip reef sharks.  They can often be sighted darting among the rocks sometimes as shallow as 2 or 3 meters. From Palong bay you take the reef right shoulder the reef gradually slopes down to around 18 meters, initially the reef consists of rocky and sandy patches, a good place to find cuttle fish and anomie’s with resident clown fish.  Further along large boulder create a more varied topography. Large sea fans and whip corals cling to their surface and turtles can often be found grazing here.

Dive Site : Maya Bay (Maya Conner)

Maya Bay.  The dive usually starts just on the corner of the bay or even a little further down towards Palong bay. An excellent site to find turtles, a shelved way drops down to a sandy bottom littered with boulders at around 20 meters. A profusion of soft corals, barrel sponges and sea fans provide shelter for numerous critters and glass fish.

Dive Site : Loh Sama Bay

A Sheltered bay on the southern end of Phi Phi Ley, with a small island in the middle. The coral gardens in the shallower parts of the bay are in pristine condition, though the area is very busy with speed boats and longtails, so dive carefully here. The small island in the middle is mostly a coral covered wall beneath the surface, though on the outside there is a spectacular canyon that is just wide enough fo tow divers. Heading out of the bay to the north you will find a cluster of pinnacles dropping to around  22 meters, and there are always large Groupers here.

Phi Leh wall is located along the east coast of Phi Phi Leh island, and it takes around 40 minutes to get there from Leisure Dive Center, Laemtong.  Starting at the southern entrance to the stunning Phi Leh lagoon, the sandy bottom varies from 11 to 20 metres depth and the whole site can be covered in a single dive if there is sufficient current. The wall is covered with soft corals and barrel sponges.  Look in the cracks for little crabs and shrimp, giant morays and sleeping lionfish.  Stick to the sandy bottom to look for flounders, blue spotted rays and even leopard sharks.  There are also some caves (not recommended to enter without special training and equipment), and you can see turtles here too busily eating the bubble coral. There are also some outlying pinnacles towards the end of the site featuring pristine corals and even rare stonefish.  Phi Leh wall is an excellent site for conducting a drift dive, and is also a suitable site for diving in low season (May-October) when the wind approaches from  the west.

Dive Site : Hin Dot

This dive site is a submerged pinnacle off Koh Phi Phi Don's southwestern headlands. Hin Dot is a great multi-level dive. The pinnacle is dominated by three interesting shelves- at 3m, 12m and 15m. This provides ample and varied underwater scenery at all levels as you spiral upwards. There are good Soft Corals at all depths. The Hard Corals are represented by tubes and laminates. The deeper sctions of the walls have numerous oysters and calms clinging to, and embedded in, the craggy surface.

Dive Site : Wang Long Bay

An extensive wall dive showcases a diverse and colourful range of soft corals, triggerfish and lionfish.

Wang Long Bay is located approx. 10 km to the southwest and is reached by speedboat in about 20 minutes. Depending on weather conditions, the dive can begin on either on the South or North side of the bay. An extensive wall dive which extends to a depth of 20 metres showcases a diverse and colourful range of soft corals such as gorgonian and whip corals. Here you can find groupers, triggerfish and lionfish. Stonefish also like this area so always be sure to look carefully!

Ao Nui (Nui Bay)

Nui Bay. Nui bay is located along the west coast of Phi Phi Don island.  Two large rocks sit in front of the bay, offering some exciting swimthroughs and home to various nudibranch species, seahorses and ghost pipefish.  Travel time to the site from our dive shop is between 15 & 25 minutes depending on which side of the island we start from.  Turtles can also be spotted here.

Nui bay is generally dived in high season when it is sheltered from wind and waves, but it can also be reached in low season when the weather is good.
