Dive Site : King Cruiser Wreck - Shark Point - Anemone Reef

King Cruiser Ship Wreck

King Cruiser. The King cruiser was a car ferry that was operating between Phuket and Phi Phi island.  In May 1997 the ship hit a reef and within 3 hours was at the bottom of the sea at a depth of 30 meters, the top of the vessel is around 10 meters from the surface.   Fortunately everyone on board survived. The greater depths and currents make this site suitable for Advanced Open Water Diver or Open Water Diver with 20+ dives. The wreck remains in one piece although the foreword upper deck has collapsed and perpetration is no longer safe on much of the wreck.  This is, however, still a fantastic dive due to the sheer size of the wreck, the amount of marine life it attracts and the abundance of coral growth.  Huge schools of snapper, barracuda and bat fish constantly swam around the structure, while closer inspection of the ship reveals nudibranchs, scorpion fish, shrimps and ribbon morays.

Shark Point (Hin Mu Sang)

Shark Point.  Shark Point or Hin Mu Sang as it is known by locals was given its name because of the frequent sightings of leopard sharks in the area. The site is has a maximum depth of 24 meters and is made up of 3 main pinnacles of varying depths.  The first one breaks the surface and has a small lighthouse situated on top of it, the second pinnacle is around 6 meters under the surface while the third starts at a depth of about 15 meters. The site is covered with striking purple and pink soft corals, sea fans and beds of table and staghorn coral.  The dive usually starts from one pinnacle and finishes at the next, due to the size and sheer volume of marine life it is rare to navigate around all three pinnacles in one dive.  Other than sharks you can expect to see large schools of snapper and barracuda. Hiding in the many crevasses or among the coral are sea horses, nudibranchs, pipefish and any number of shrimp.

Anemone Reef (Hin Jom)

Anemone Reef or Hin Jom, meaning submerged rock, derives its English name from the profusion of lime green and sky blue magnificent anemone's that cover this pinnacle, home to not only a variety of clown and anemone fish but also porcelain crabs, shrimp and damsel fish. A dive at Anemone Reef usually starts with a descent to the bottom of the pinnacle. You can then slowly circle your way up the reef until you reach your safety stop level at the end of your dive. Sometimes the currents make it difficult to circumnavigate the reef in which case your guide will lead you on a zigzag route up one side of the pinnacle to avoid heavy finning against the current. On the eastern slope of the pinnacle you can find large examples of lemon sea fans. Barrel sponges dot the lower slopes, and you can often find big, well-fed bearded scorpion fish resting inside their open barrel rims. These creatures are masters of camouflage and adopt crazy patchwork markings of white and pale pink, to match the granite rocks of Anemone Reef. Large schools of fish are everywhere on Anemone Reef, including various families of snapper, grouper and fusiliers. Whichever way you dive Anemone Reef it is a spectacular site.
